On May 5th, 2015 Google announced that a prediction made last year by their employees has come to pass: In 10 countries across the world, including the US and Japan, mobile has officially surpassed desktop in Google search inquiries.
Shut the front door! Okay not really- truthfully, does this surprise anyone?
The internet is no longer parameterized by this huge desktop that sits on a desk in our living room and office but rather, it’s a way of life- something we’re all connected to during most points of our day.
From the moment we wake up and shut off our alarm and white noise app, until the moment we switch both those apps back on and settle in for the night, our cellphones are dutifully by our side. It’s now been confirmed that 91% of consumers are routinely conducting Google searches while in the middle of a task, like searching for the nearest Starbucks en route to work for example, or brushing their teeth and scanning yelp for nearby breakfast spots. We use our mobile phones for work, music, correspondence, directions, games, reviews and dating. In short- our mobile phones do a lot!
Imagine deciding to give up modern plumbing. You could argue that there’s another way to gather and heat water for all your-day-to-day necessities but no one would be foolish enough to believe that forsaking the convenient method of indoor plumbing is going to be an easy transition.
The same goes for our mobile phones. Sure, we could go back to doing things the old way- like waiting until we get to a desktop to find and print what we’re looking for, but we’d be giving up the convenience of mobile- Internet and communication on-the-go. It’s a service that once we’ve had a taste, has become virtually indispensable.
Yes, for the first time ever, mobile search has surpassed desktop search and we’re not at all surprised. Consumers have caught on to the convenience of mobile Internet and as we’re all obsessed with immediacy, there’s really no going back.
